Kia Recalls Over 400k Vehicles That Could Move While in Park
Kia has issued a recall for over 427,000 vehicles in the United States due to a defect that could allow certain models to roll away while in park. According to reports, the Kia recalls impacts certain 2020-2023 Telluride SUVs and some 2024 models.
The issue is caused by a potential problem with the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft. Which may not be fully engaged due to improper assembly at the supplier. Over time, partial engagement could cause damage to the intermediate shaft splines. Resulting in unintended vehicle movement if the parking brake is not applied.
A Growing Safety Issue
This is just the latest in a string of involuntary Kia recalls related to rollaway issues. In recent years, both Kia and sister brand Hyundai have faced scrutiny over vehicles that could shift out of park unintentionally. While no crashes or injuries have been linked to this specific Kia recalls yet, the potential danger underscores the need for a permanent fix.
Owners of affected Kia Telluride vehicles will be notified by mail starting May 15th. They will then need to bring their SUV to a dealer for a software update. To ensure the transmission will not inadvertently disengage from park.
In severe cases where damage is found, the intermediate shaft will be replaced as well. Kia will also reimburse customers who have already paid for repairs related to this issue. While inconvenient, getting these Kia recalls vehicles fixed will undoubtedly improve safety for Telluride drivers and the public.
