Google Drive Gets a New Categorization System to Better Organize Your Files
Google Drive, one of the most popular cloud storage solutions, is making it even easier for users to organize their files. Spotted in recent updates, Google seems to be working on a new categorization feature for Drive that will let users tag their files under relevant topics. This could be a big improvement over the current system.
The new categorization system will include 12 different categories that files can be tagged with: auto, banking, expenses, home, insurance, medical, pets, school, taxes, travel, and work. Users will be able to assign one or multiple categories to better sort their files. This is similar to the existing “Labels” feature available in Google Workspace but will be accessible to all Drive users.
How the New Google Drive Categorization Works
When the feature fully rolls out, users will see a “Manage Categories” option under the three-dot menu in the Drive mobile and desktop apps. From there, they can browse the different category options and select the appropriate ones for each file. The categories will then be immediately reflected in the Drive “Home” view for easier browsing and access. This provides a more intuitive way to classify files compared to the current search-based system.
The new categorization system in Google Drive has the potential to make file organization much simpler. Only time will tell how useful each of the 12 initial categories end up being for most users. But having the ability to logically separate files into auto, finances, home, school and other topics could be a big help for staying organized in Google’s cloud storage solution. Look out for this feature to potentially launch in the coming months.
