Labour’s Angela Rayner Faces Fresh Tax Scrutiny As Allies Defend Her Actions
Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner continues to face questions over her tax arrangements concerning the sale of a former home, with the Mail on Sunday releasing further social media posts they claim contradict her account. However, shadow cabinet ally David Lammy has mounted a staunch defense of Rayner, insisting she has done nothing wrong and followed all relevant tax rules.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr. Lammy dismissed the latest reports as merely attempts to distract from the government’s own issues. He said Angela Rayner’s living situation, like many blended families, involved time spent at both her own property and her then-husband’s address. According to Lammy, Rayner was fully entitled to make use of both residences and had sought professional tax advice confirming her arrangements were compliant.
Lammy: Rayner Has My “Full Support”
The shadow foreign secretary declared his complete backing for his colleague Angela Rayner. While acknowledging different standards may apply to the Prime Minister compared to an opposition MP, Lammy stressed Rayner had done nothing that required further transparency beyond following the appropriate rules. He called on critics to stop “dismissing and distracting” from her explanations and instead focus on the “Tory chaos” currently facing the government.
With Angela Rayner unwilling to publicly disclose her tax advice at this stage, the Conservative Party continues pushing for a more thorough independent review of her arrangements. However, Lammy and other allies insist she has already provided a satisfactory account and complied with all legal obligations. Only further solid evidence of non-compliance might shift the stance of Rayner’s defenders within Labour ranks. For now, the party continues rallying behind her assertions of innocence in this ongoing political headache.
