DFW Airport Hikes Parking Rates to Fund Major Upgrades
DFW Airport officials recently announced that parking rates at the airport will increase starting May 1st. Daily rates for economy and express lots will go up $2-5, while the fee for drivers simply passing through the airport property will rise $3. The hikes are needed to generate revenue for over $500 million in critical infrastructure upgrades planned over the coming years.
As the second busiest airport in the world, DFW Airport sees tens of thousands of vehicles come through its gates every day. This heavy traffic takes a toll on roads and structures not designed for such massive volumes. The rate increases will fund projects like reconstructing aging parking garages, transitioning some terminals to right-hand exit bridges, and renovating roadways in desperate need of repair.
How Will the Rate Hikes Impact Travelers?
For travelers, the increases will mean paying a bit more to park at DFW Airport. Daily economy lot rates rise to $32 from $27, while express covered parking goes to $21 from $18. Valet jumps to $45 from $40. Rideshare drivers will pay $9 instead of $6 for brief pickups/drop-offs. However, prebooking parking online can still provide discounts. The hikes aim to spread upgrade costs fairly across all airport users.
DFW Airport officials stressed that even with the increases, their parking rates will remain competitive regionally. Nearby airports like Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson already charge more for daily parking. The extra funds will go towards much needed renovations to ensure DFW Airport ‘s roadways and garages can support its growing passenger volumes for many years to come.
