These days, health experts suggest that patients at risk of cardiovascular disease should limit their cholesterol intake.

While dietary cholesterol does not translate into high blood cholesterol, eating a high-fat meal can increase arterial inflammation. It also increases the oxidation of LDL-C, which is linked to cardiovascular disease.

What Is the Yolk Sac in Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, the yolk sac plays a crucial role in the development of the fetus. It produces the early cells that form the gastrointestinal system and the umbilical cord. It also provides the baby with all the nutrients it needs during early development.

The yolk sac can be seen on ultrasounds between weeks six and nine of pregnancy.

It can be a round or pear-shaped structure that is 3 to 5 millimeters in diameter. It may look like a ring on the ultrasound. However, it may not be visible after week nine.

Studies have shown that enlarged yolk sacs are associated with a higher risk of first-trimester loss and miscarriage. However, the effect on live birth outcomes has not been studied yet.

The main aim of the study was to assess the relationship between ultrasound findings of yolk sac size and pregnancy outcome.

The study was performed on 100 pregnant women between 5 and 10 weeks of gestation at Tanta University Hospitals. Approximately 44% of these patients were able to complete the pregnancy. However, 38% of the patients had low birth weights.

There was also a significant increase in the number of miscarriages among pregnancies with yolk sac diameters greater than 36 mm.

The incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in these pregnancies was high. This may be nature’s way of preventing unhealthy pregnancies.

The yolk sac should be seen by ultrasound providers at weeks five to six of pregnancy. Repeat ultrasound in one to two weeks may reveal the fetal pole.
