UK to Replace Biometric Residence Permits with Digital Visa System
The UK government is planning to modernize its immigration process by replacing physical biometric residence permits with an entirely digital system. The new online visa records, called eVisas, will provide immigrants and international students an easier way to verify their immigration status in the UK.
How will the New eVisa System Work?
Under the new eVisa system, immigrants will no longer need to carry physical documents like biometric residence permits once they create an online account with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Their visa information and immigration permissions will be stored digitally. To travel to or remain in the UK, they can simply access their eVisa status online through their UKVI account.
This marks a significant transition away from paper-based immigration documentation. Starting January 2025, the UK will stop issuing physical biometric residence permits and instead manage visa records electronically. The digital shift aims to modernize UK border management and streamline the immigration experience. Immigrants will face fewer hassles verifying their status without bulky permits or endorsements.
Authorities also expect the eVisa system to facilitate travel while maintaining border security through centralized digital records. Overall, the changes promise a more convenient immigration process for all.
