Pioneering Recipient’s Experience with Neuralink Implant: Playing Civilization VI through Thought Alone
In 2022, Matthew Hancock made history as the first human to receive a Neuralink Implant. This brain-computer interface was developed by Elon Musk’s company to one day help paralyzed individuals control devices with their mind. As the implant’s first recipient, Hancock volunteered to test its capabilities and see how effectively it could translate his thoughts. To his amazement, he found the Neuralink Implant enabled him to play one of his favorite games – Civilization VI – solely through thinking commands.
Hancock had been a longtime fan of the popular civilization-building strategy game but found using a controller or keyboard increasingly difficult due to a condition affecting his hands. The Neuralink Implant offered new hope that he could enjoy gaming again. After undergoing the implantation surgery, researchers worked with Hancock to calibrate the device to his unique brain signals over many sessions. Once properly tuned, he was amazed to find he could issue move, build, and combat orders to his in-game civilization just by thinking them.
A Gamer’s Dream Fulfilled
Controlling the complex 4X gameplay of Civilization VI through thought alone was an incredible experience, Hancock said. Being able to found and grow his virtual empire without the need for physical inputs was like a dream come true. While control through thought required intense concentration at first, he quickly gained proficiency. Hancock credits the Neuralink Implant with allowing him to indulge his passion for gaming even with his condition. He looks forward to assisting further in Neuralink’s research and helping expand the device’s applications.
Hancock’s story shows the promise of brain-computer interfaces to enhance people’s lives. While still early technology, Neuralink Implants may someday help countless individuals with disabilities regain independence. They could also usher in new frontiers of gaming controlled by thought. As the first human recipient, Hancock is proud to help advance this innovative field even through simply sharing his joy of playing Civilization VI solely through his mind.
