TikTok Looks to Expand Beyond Videos with Upcoming TikTok Photos App

Sources have uncovered evidence that the popular social media platform TikTok is secretly working on a new app called “TikTok Photos” dedicated to photo sharing. Code found within the latest version of the TikTok Android app references an unreleased app with the goal of helping users “reach other like-minded people who enjoy photo posts.”

Strings in the code provide more clues about “TikTok Photos”, stating it will launch soon and allow syncing of public photos between a user’s TikTok profile and their profile within the new standalone app. Icon designs were also found that appear to be placeholders for the yet-to-launch photo sharing experience.

How will “TikTok Photos” work?

It remains unclear exactly how “TikTok Photos” will function or when it may launch. However, the uncovered code suggests it will operate as a separate app from TikTok that focuses exclusively on sharing photos publicly rather than videos. Users would presumably be able to cross-post photos to both TikTok and “TikTok Photos” if they choose to link their accounts.

By expanding into photos with “TikTok Photos”, the company seems to be making a play for users who prefer sharing pictures over motion media. It will be interesting to see if TikTok can succeed beyond videos with this new app dedicated to photography. More details about “TikTok Photos” are sure to surface as its development progresses further.
