Follow the London Marathon Route with the “Pub Crawl”
Whether you’re watching the London Marathon 2024 or taking part in your own version, following the route of pubs is a fun way to spend the day. Some local “beer experts” have mapped out stops serving refreshing drinks every few miles. From Greenwich to Buckingham Palace, here are some watering holes to cheer on runners or celebrate your own achievements.
One of the first pubs along the route is The Royal Standard in Greenwich. Only a mile into the marathon, it offers an elegant pub with food and friendly atmosphere. Further east, The Dial Arch near Woolwich boasts a fantastic drinks selection and beer garden ideal for seeing participants pass by. Another early spot is The White Horse Charlton with quality beers and views of runners on the loop back to Greenwich.
Mid-Race Motivation
As the marathon hits halfway at Canary Wharf, The Cutty Sark pub provides stunning river views perfect for spotting elite athletes. After that, The Mayflower in Rotherhithe has an oldest Thames-side pub setting and outside seating over the water. Entering the business district, stop at The Raven near Tower Bridge for craft beers by a waterside fire if cold. The George Poplar is also ideal with its large beer garden for cheering on runners at mile 17.
Finishing strong, The Henry Addington has outdoor space to track the competition’s final miles. Walkers of Whitehall sits next to landmarks like Trafalgar Square for motivation. And the perfect celebration is at The Buckingham Arms, right by the finish at Buckingham Palace. Whether spectating or doing your own “pub marathon,” this guide offers refreshments along one of London’s most famous routes.
