Liga MX Apertura 2023: Club América’s Quest for Top Spot

Club América is on the cusp of making a significant mark in the Liga MX Apertura 2023. With an important game coming up against Atlético San Luis on matchday 15 they have a chance to solidify their control.

For Club América to be crown the league-phase champions of Liga MX Apertura 2023, they need to secure a win against San Luis. Furthermore if Tigres, who currently hold the Liga MX title either draw or lose their match, against Tijuana it would further solidify Américas position.

It’s worth mentioning that Tigres are currently trailing by five points behind Las Águilas with three regular season games remaining.

The face off between San Luis and América is schedule to take place at the Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramírez at 11 pm ET. On the hand the Tijuana vs Tigres match will kick off later at 11;06 pm ET in the Estadio Caliente.

América has already secured their spot in the postseason quarter finals for Liga MX Apertura 2023 thanks to their six finish. Their impressive 3 0 victory over Monterrey, on matchday 14 has put them a 12 points ahead of placed Toluca.

Chasing Records

América, who currently has 33 points has the potential to reach a total of 42 points if they manage to win their remaining three regular season games.

This would be quite an accomplishment. Would come close, to their Liga MX record of 43 points in the Apertura 2002. It’s worth noting that this record was set when there 19 games played in a season.

In the format of 17 games the record stands at 41 points, which achieved by Club León in the Clausura 2019. América is now, within distance of surpassing this record.

Being the regular-season champions of Liga MX Apertura 2023 comes with its perks. In the quarter finals and semi finals of the Liga MX the team, with the ranking is pair with the ranked team. This arrangement not gives them an easier opponent but also grants them the advantage of choosing kick off times.

However it’s important to note that winning the season or being consider the ‘superlíder’ doesn’t guarantee success in clinching the Liga MX title. In fact out of 27 years since its establishment, in 1996 this achievement has only been accomplished eight times.
