Kari Lake Flip-Flops On Arizona Abortion Ban As Midterms Loom

Far-right politician Kari Lake who is running for US Senate in Arizona has backtracked on her previous support for the state’s strict abortion ban law. Declaring it goes too far in restricting women’s rights. The sudden U-turn from Lake comes just months after she praised the “great law” already on the books in Arizona that would ban abortion except to save the mother’s life.

As the 2024 midterm elections loom, Kari Lake ‘s change of stance is being viewed as a cynical political maneuver. Aimed at appealing to moderate voters concerned about women’s healthcare access. Arizona’s ban outlaws abortion from conception with no exceptions for rape or incest. Going beyond even the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v Wade. Public opinion polls consistently show the majority of Americans support abortion remaining legal.

Lake’s Contradictory Comments

Kari Lake

In a June 2022 radio interview, Kari Lake had enthusiastically endorsed the pre-Roe Arizona law. Citing its number and saying “I think we’re going to be paving the way and setting course for other states to follow.” However, in her reversal this week, an adviser claimed Lake was referring to a different law. The politician is now urging the state legislature to find a “commonsense solution” to the total ban. Though she remains personally opposed to abortion.

Kari Lake shifting stance has drawn criticism of political opportunism from opponents. As midterm races heat up, protecting abortion access is a top priority for many voters. By distancing herself from the unpopular total ban, Lake appears to be attempting to appeal to moderates while still courting supporters of overturning Roe. However, her credibility on the issue has been seriously damaged by the contradictory comments.
