Ohio State Spring Game Leaves Fans Excited But Questions Remain

Over 80,000 fans packed Ohio Stadium on Saturday to catch a glimpse of the upcoming season at the annual Ohio State spring game. While the Buckeyes’ defense dominated and several young stars emerged, quarterback competition and offensive struggles mean Ryan Day’s team still has work to do before autumn.

Led by returning stars like JT Tuimoloau, the Ohio State defense controlled the Ohio State spring game from the opening kickoff. Quarterbacks struggled under relentless pressure and a secondary loaded with future pros came up with interceptions and pass breakups. Jim Knowles has wasted no time establishing this group as one of the best in the country, but how will the offense match their intensity come fall?

Quarterback Quandary Continues

With C.J. Stroud now in the NFL, the battle to lead the Buckeye offense is still wide open. Devin Brown made some plays with his legs but also threw an interception, while Will Howard showed off his big arm on a deep ball to Emeka Egbuka. None of the signal callers were able to lead scoring drives against the first-string defense. Who will emerge from the competition remains a mystery even after the Ohio State spring game.

Freshman wideout Jeremiah Smith turned heads in his Ohio State spring game debut, flashing the skills that made him a five-star recruit. But with top targets like Marvin Harrison Jr and Julian Fleming now in the NFL, more unproven playmakers need to step up for the offense to reach its potential. Fans got their first glimpse of the 2023 Buckeyes at the Ohio State spring game, but Ryan Day still has work ahead to solve issues on offense before facing in-state rival Michigan.
