The Long Fight for Freedom: One Year of Evan Gershkovich Imprisonment in Russia

March 29th marked one year since American journalist Evan Gershkovich was detained by authorities in Russia. The Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested in Yekaterinburg while conducting reporting in the country. Since then, he has been held at the notorious Lefortovo prison in Moscow as he awaits trial and faces vague charges. His imprisonment has been condemned by free press advocates and human rights organizations worldwide.

On the anniversary of Evan Gershkovich’s detention, The Wall Street Journal commemorated the day with a social media campaign and print front page dedicated to raising awareness of his plight. Editor Emma Tucker spoke out. Emphasizing the importance of keeping international attention focused on the case until the journalist is released. The paper has relentlessly advocated for their colleague during his year behind bars.

A Year of Stolen Journalism

Evan Gershkovich

In marking the anniversary, The Journal’s front page featured a large blank space. Representing the impact of Evan Gershkovich’s absence and imprisonment on the loss of his reporting from Russia. “A year in Russian prison. A year of stolen stories, stolen joys, stolen memories. The crime: journalism,” the text above the space read. The installation powerfully depicted the toll that authorities’ crackdowns take on free press.

While the future remains uncertain, Tucker expressed her hope that with the continued efforts and spotlight brought by The Journal and press freedom defenders, the next 12 months may see the release of Evan Gershkovich. As one of the preeminent newspapers in the world fights for one of their own, the case underscores the vital importance of protecting and advocating for journalists around the globe.
