Learn To Drive For Free With DWP Universal Credit Driving Lessons

The Motability Driving Lessons Grant Programme gives up to 40 hours of free driving lessons to people receiving certain disability benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This includes those on the DWP Universal Credit allowance as well as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA). The aim is to help people gain independence and access to education or employment opportunities through learning to drive.

How To Apply For DWP Universal Credit Driving Lessons

DWP Universal Credit

To be eligible for the free lessons through Motability, you must have a provisional driving license and be in receipt of either the enhanced rates of PIP mobility component, higher rates of DLA mobility component or the means-tested benefits including DWP Universal Credit. A case manager will review your application which can take up to 10 weeks to process during busy periods.

On average, new drivers need 40-50 hours of lessons before they are ready for their driving test. All lessons are with a qualified instructor but you will need to pay for your theory and practical tests yourself. The grant aims to help as many eligible benefit claimants as possible to learn to drive through this charitable funding.

To start the application process and find out more about the eligibility criteria, visit the Motability website. The free lessons could make a big difference for those receiving DWP Universal Credit who want independence and job opportunities that having a driving license provides.
