Shortage of Huy Fong Sriracha Enters Second Year, Driving Prices to Over $30 per Bottle

More than a year ago, Huy Fong Foods, the California-based company known for its popular Sriracha, Chili Garlic, and Sambal Oelek sauces, officially confirmed an impending shortage. The company cited adverse weather conditions and a sub-par chili pepper crop as significant factors contributing to the shortage of Huy Fong Sriracha. This unfortunate situation was expected to affect wholesale, restaurant, and individual customers.

In a statement provided to Food & Wine, a Huy Fong spokesperson expressed their concerns. Stating, “Unfortunately, we can confirm that there is an unprecedented shortage of our products. We are actively working to resolve this issue caused by several spiraling events.

Including unexpected crop failure from the spring chili harvest. We remain hopeful for a fruitful fall season and sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience and continued support during this challenging time.”

Despite the passage of time, Huy Fong Foods continues to face significant obstacles in their supply chain. The lack of essential raw materials has resulted in an ongoing inventory shortage.

The company clarified that while some production resumed during the previous fall season. The limited supply continues to affect their overall production capacity.

Currently, there are no estimations as to when the supply will increase. Huy Fong Foods, however, remains committed to resolving these challenges and preventing future shortage of Huy Fong Sriracha.

The scarcity of Huy Fong’s Sriracha sauce has led to a dramatic increase in prices and limited availability. At present, major retail websites such as Target.com or Walmart.com do not offer the sought-after product.

Only third-party sellers on platforms like Amazon have the remaining inventory. And they have taken advantage of the situation by significantly raising the prices.

On eBay, optimistic sellers have listed single 28-ounce bottles for prices ranging from $38 to $44, far surpassing the original retail price.

Shortage of Huy Fong Sriracha

Reports from San Francisco have indicated that Sriracha enthusiasts, desperate to satisfy their cravings, have resorted to taking bottles from restaurant tables.

Mariel Edwards, the operations manager for Senor Sisig, shared that bottles of Sriracha would mysteriously disappear from tables.

Highlighting the extreme measures some customers are willing to take. In other instances, individuals have called restaurants, inquiring about purchasing the precious sauce directly from their limited supply.

During the previous summer, a Vietnamese restaurant in Los Angeles made a unique offer to tackle the scarcity.

They invited customers to trade unopened bottles of Sriracha for free food, including banh mi, popcorn chicken, or spring rolls.

However, with the current state of the shortage, what initially appeared as an appealing deal has lost its appeal as the prices for Sriracha bottles continue to surge.

The persistent shortage of Huy Fong Sriracha sauce has led to inflated prices, making it increasingly challenging for fans of the popular condiment to satisfy their cravings.

What was once an affordable and beloved pantry staple has become a luxury item, with bottles now being sold for over $40 each.

The rising cost further emphasizes the difficulties faced by both consumers and establishments that rely on this iconic sauce.

As customers eagerly await relief from the ongoing shortage, the Sriracha drought serves as a reminder of the impact weather conditions and crop failures can have on food production and availability.
