Search Underway for Missing Titanic Tourist Submarine in Mid-Atlantic

A large-scale search and rescue mission is currently underway in the mid-Atlantic after a Titanic tourist submarine went missing during a dive to the wreck of the Titanic.

The US Coast Guard reported that contact with the small sub was lost. Approximately one hour and 45 minutes into its dive.

All efforts are being made to rescue the five individuals onboard. With assistance from government agencies, the US and Canadian navies, and commercial deep-sea companies.

OceanGate, the tour firm responsible for the expedition, stated that they are exploring all possible options to locate and rescue the missing submersible.

The eight-day trip, which costs $250,000 per ticket, offers the unique opportunity to explore the Titanic wreckage at a depth of 3,800m (12,500ft).

The missing submersible is believed to be OceanGate’s Titan. A sizable submersible capable of carrying five people and equipped with a four-day emergency oxygen supply.

Extensive Search Efforts in Challenging Conditions

The search operation involves two aircraft, a Titanic tourist submarine. And sonar buoys, but the remote location of the search area, approximately 435 miles (700km) south of St John’s, Newfoundland, poses significant challenges.

Rear Adm John Mauger of the US Coast Guard explained that there is an estimated window of 70 to 96 hours for the rescue teams.

Despite the difficulties, the rescue teams are commit to bringing the individuals on board the submersible back home safely.

Among those on the missing Titanic tourist submarine is 58-year-old British billionaire businessman and explorer, Hamish Harding. His family confirmed his presence on the submersible.

Hamish Harding had previously expressed excitement about joining the mission to the Titanic’s wreck. Acknowledging the unique circumstances due to adverse weather conditions.

OceanGate expressed its utmost concern for the crew members and their families. And expressed gratitude for the extensive assistance received from various entities involved in the rescue efforts.

And provides 96 hours of life support for a crew of five. Communicating with the submerged vessel presents challenges as conventional means like GPS and radio signals do not function underwater.

The Titanic, known as the largest ship of its time, sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. Over 1,500 passengers and crew members lost their lives out of the 2,200 onboard.
