Massive Turnout at Historic Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade Draws Global Attention
This past weekend, Vancouver witnessed a historic event as tens of thousands of people gathered to participate in the annual Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade, also known as Nagar Kirtan. The parade, which dates back to 1979, is considered the oldest Vaisakhi celebration in Canada and is organised by the Khalsa Diwan Society.
The Vaisakhi Parade in Vancouver saw an estimated 200,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds coming together to celebrate the establishment of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699 and the beginning of the spring harvest. The parade was not only a cultural and religious event but also a symbol of unity and community.
Canadian politicians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Leader of the Opposition Pierre Poilievre, were present at the event and extended their greetings to the Sikh community in Canada and worldwide. Trudeau remarked that Vaisakhi is a time for reflection, gratitude, and renewal, while Poilievre sent his best wishes to Sikhs celebrating the founding of the Khalsa.
