Canada Visa Cap Leaves Telugu Students Exploring Other Study Abroad Options
Zahra Sheikh, a student from Old City, Hyderabad had her heart set on studying in Canada but the recent policy changes have thrown a wrench in her plans. “It was tough enough dealing with the increased financial requirements, but this Canada visa cap has made everything so uncertain,” she says.
The Canada visa cap is expected to reduce authorized study permits to around 360,000 over the next two years – a 35% decrease from 2023 levels. As one of the largest groups of international students in Canada, this cap is having a major impact on Indian students hoping to study abroad.
What are Telugu Students’ Options Now?
With doors closing in Canada, consultancies are helping students explore alternative destinations. “We’re seeing a lot more interest in the US, UK, Australia, Ireland, Germany and France as options” says Arvind Manduva from an education consultancy. While the US remains the top choice, countries like Ireland and Germany are gaining popularity as more affordable options compared to others.
The Canada visa cap has definitely been a bitter lesson for many Telugu families banking on Canada for their children’s higher education dreams. Students will have to work harder than ever to stand out amidst increased competition for fewer seats. Those who apply early may have a better chance of securing admissions before spots fill up. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Indian students affected by this unexpected Canada visa cap.
