George Santos Makes a Surprising Return to Politics
In a shocking move, former New York Congressman George Santos announced he is launching a campaign to return to Congress. Santos, who represented New York’s 3rd District until being expelled last year, will primary incumbent Republican Rep. Nick LaLota in the state’s competitive 1st District.
Santos’ bid is sure to stir up controversy given his tumultuous exit from office last year. He was the sixth member ever expelled from the House. After being convicted on 23 federal charges including fraud and lying on financial disclosures. However, Santos believes he is still the best choice for the district, calling LaLota a “RINO” in his announcement.
LaLota Hits Back at Santos
Rep. LaLota wasted no time responding fiercely to George Santos announcement. In a statement, he said “If finishing the job of holding Santos accountable requires beating him in a primary, count me in.” LaLota was instrumental in leading the effort to expel Santos from Congress last year. With several strong Democratic contenders also in the race. Santos will have an uphill battle winning over voters and emerging from a crowded field.
Political observers are stunned by George Santos audacity in launching a comeback attempt so soon after his ouster. However, the 1st District race is competitive and Santos believes name recognition could give him an edge, even with his troubled history. It remains to be seen if voters will give the disgraced former congressman a second chance at office.
