Trump Takes Early Lead in GOP Caucuses Battle Ahead Of Super Tuesday
Former President Donald Trump has taken an early lead in the battle for the Republican presidential nomination, winning the GOP caucuses in both Missouri and Idaho. CNN was able to project Trump as the victor in the states based on results from county conventions that saw local delegates selected. This gives the former leader momentum as attention now turns to next week’s ‘Super Tuesday’.
As well as winning the GOP caucuses in the reliably red states, Trump also cemented his control of the delegation from Michigan after formally winning all 39 delegates at stake at the state’s party convention. This victory moves Trump closer to securing the nomination for a third consecutive time and sets up another potential showdown with President Joe Biden in 2024.
Can Haley Close The Gap?
The only candidate still actively challenging Trump is former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. However, she faces an uphill battle to overcome Trump’s high popularity within the Republican base. Haley campaigned in North Carolina today in a bid to improve her chances on Super Tuesday, where states like California and Texas hold their primaries. But early polls continue to show Trump with a substantial lead nationally.
With today’s triumphs, Trump now holds a commanding early lead heading into next week’s frenzied Super Tuesday schedule. It remains to be seen whether Haley can make inroads by winning some of the larger delegate states voting then. But for now, it seems Trump is well on his way to clinching the Republican nomination for the third election in a row.
