KU Star Kevin McCullar Sidelined for Big Dance Due to Lingering Knee Issues
Kansas basketball will be without the services of veteran guard Kevin McCullar in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The graduate senior has been trying to overcome a bone bruise in his knee that has persisted despite rehabilitation efforts. According to Jayhawks head coach Bill Self, McCullar and the team medical staff have determined playing is not a wise option given the injury has not improved.
Kevin McCullar has missed significant time already this season while attempting to recover from the knee issue. He last played in Kansas’ loss to Houston in early March before exiting midway through the game. Self said McCullar “shouldn’t have played” in that contest. And has not practiced fully in over six weeks as the bone bruise lingered. After consulting with doctors, McCullar acknowledged he is not physically or mentally ready to compete at a high level in the tournament.
Alternatives Evaluated
Both Kevin McCullar and the Kansas coaching staff examined all potential solutions. But none presented a path for the guard to suit up. Self noted McCullar has put in 6-7 hours daily with the training staff to rehab the injury. While various treatment options were tried, the bone bruise pain did not subside. McCullar expressed his devastation at being unable to help his team in the Big Dance but recognized further playing could risk long-term health issues.
With Kevin McCullar ruled out, Nick Timberlake or Elmarko Jackson will likely replace him in the Jayhawks starting five. Self told the reserves it is “put up or shut up time” with their increased roles. While a tough loss, Kansas will look to the experienced backcourt duo of Dajuan Harris Jr. and Joseph Yesufu alongside big man Hunter Dickinson to lead the offense in McCullar’s absence during the NCAA Tournament.
