Major Automakers Unite for North American EV Charging Network Expansion

A group of leading automakers, including BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, have announced a joint venture to expand the North American EV charging network.

This move is a significant step towards making electric vehicle charging more accessible. And convenient for users across the US and Canada.

The Grand Plan for the North American EV Charging Network

The ambitious plan for this currently unnamed partnership is to install at least 30,000 high-speed EV chargers by 2030. The first of these chargers are expect to be operational by the summer of 2024 in the US.

The North American EV charging network will be fund by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) in the US. Along with other private and public funding sources.

The strategy behind the North American EV charging network is to install chargers in places where people can shop, eat, and use the bathroom. Similar to existing networks like Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America.

The new chargers will also be install along routes to vacation destinations and in metropolitan areas. Making long-distance travel in electric vehicles more feasible.

User-Friendly Charging in the North America

One of the key features of the North American EV network will be its user-friendliness. The new stations will be able to charge EV models made by the partnered automakers without the need for a separate charging station app.

The companies also plan to integrate the developing “Plug and Charge” standard that the Federal Highway Administration is attempting to standardize.

The new joint venture is also plan to be entirely power by renewable energy. However, it’s not yet known if renewable energy will directly power them or if the companies plan to buy credits.

Canadians will have to wait for a later stage before initial stations are install. All stations will include the standardized Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports and also the current widely used Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs.

The North American EV charging network is set to revolutionize the EV charging infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
