Pro-Palestinian Politician’s Shock Win Deals Blow to Labour Party Hopes

Veteran politician George Galloway pulled off a stunning upset in the Rochdale by-election on Thursday, defeating the Labour Party candidate by nearly 6,000 votes. Galloway capitalized on Labour’s last-minute withdrawal of support from their original candidate over controversial comments about Israel. His pro-Palestinian message resonated strongly with voters in the constituency, delivering a symbolic blow to Keir Starmer’s Labour Party hopes.

Galloway, a former Labour Party member himself, was expelled from the party in 2003 for opposing the Iraq war. However, he retains popularity in Muslim communities for his longtime advocacy on Palestinian issues. During the campaign, he directly appealed to Muslim voters that the “Labour Party under Keir Starmer have betrayed Muslims.” Labour has struggled with balancing criticism of Israel without offending Jewish communities in recent years.

How Did Galloway Pull Off The Upset Victory?

Labour Party

Through aggressive campaigning appealing to the local Muslim population’s sentiments on Palestine, Galloway was able to fill the vacuum left by Labour Party hasty withdrawal of their original candidate. His message portraying the Labour Party as failing both Rochdale and Gaza resonated strongly in the final stretch. Turnout was high as Galloway mobilized support. While the result may say more about local factors than national politics, it raises concerns for Labour about properly vetting candidates ahead of the looming general election.

The by-election was seen as a key test for both main parties ahead of the national vote expected later this year. While a single seat may not shift the overall picture, Galloway’s insurgent campaign highlights the delicate balancing act Labour faces on foreign policy issues. Labour Party will need to ensure candidates’ views don’t undermine their own carefully crafted positions if they hope to win back voters. Galloway’s populist message proved a winning formula in Rochdale, but may not translate as well nationwide.
