Rare’s First Voyage on PlayStation in Sea of Thieves
For nearly 40 years, Rare has entertained gamers with its imaginative worlds and characters across Nintendo and Xbox platforms. However, the developer founded in 1985 had never released a game on a PlayStation system – until now. On April 30th, Rare’s acclaimed shared-world pirate voyage Sea of Thieves will land on PS5, marking the first time one of the studio’s games has appeared on a Sony console.
With over 35 million players on PC and Xbox, Sea of Thieves invites crews of buccaneers to sail the seas together in search of treasure, glory and mischief. Players must work as a team to battle other ships, discover hidden riches and survive treacherous voyages across the game’s expansive open waters. Since launching in 2018, Rare has supported the game with frequent content updates that have expanded its story and added new areas to plunder.
A New Crew Joins the Adventure
While Rare itself isn’t developing the PlayStation port, UK studio Third Kind Games is handling the conversion. In a tweet, Third Kind expressed their excitement “to be working with the incredibly talented team at Rare to bring the hugely successful Sea of Thieves to PS5.” It remains to be seen if the PlayStation version can match the experience offered on other platforms, but with Sea of Thieves’ engaging cooperative gameplay, there’s plenty for new players on PS5 to enjoy as they set sail towards riches and reputation.
For almost four decades, Rare’s acclaimed worlds and characters have been mainstays on Nintendo and Xbox systems. But on April 30th, the studio breaks new ground as its popular multiplayer adventure Sea of Thieves sets anchor on PlayStation shores for the first time. With over 35 million players already crewing the seas across PC and Xbox, Sea of Thieves promises to win over a whole new fleet of pirates on PS5.
