Hunter Schafer Shares Her Thoughts on Transgender Representation in Hollywood
Hunter Schafer, the star of HBO’s Euphoria, recently opened up about her thoughts on transgender roles in film and television. In a candid interview, the actress known for playing Jules on the hit show discussed why she is now more selective about the types of transgender characters she portrays.
“As a young Hunter Schafer just starting out in the industry, I felt an obligation to accept any role offered to me. That allowed me to represent the trans experience on screen. But now that I’ve had more time to think about the impact of the roles I take. I want to be more discerning.”
A Need for Nuanced Representation
In the past, Hunter Schafer note that many transgender characters she was offered fell into stereotypical tropes and lack dimensionality. “So often trans stories are only about the transition or struggle with identity. It’s important we show that trans people can just be regular human beings too.” She hopes that by choosing roles with more nuance and complexity, it will help shift broader perceptions.
Hunter Schafer’s breakout role as Jules on Euphoria has praised for presenting a fully realized young transgender woman living her day-to-day life. “Jules dealt with many of the same joys, heartbreaks, and challenges that all teens face growing up. That level of relatability and humanity is what I want to continue bringing to trans roles.”
