House Passes Controversial Laken Riley Act Aimed at Detaining Immigrant Criminals
The House voted on Thursday to pass the Laken Riley Act, a new bill aimed at cracking down on undocumented immigrants who commit crimes. The legislation, introduced by Republican Rep. Mike Collins, mandates the detention of any migrant apprehended for burglary or theft offenses. It is named after Laken Hope Riley, a 22-year-old Georgia college student who was murdered last month allegedly by an undocumented immigrant who illegally crossed the border.
The passage of the Laken Riley Act was largely along party lines, with all Republicans voting in favor and most Democrats opposing it. Supporters argue the bill is necessary to honor Laken Riley and prevent similar future tragedies, but critics say it is an attempt to politicize her death and target immigrants ahead of the 2024 election. Speaker Mike Johnson praised the act, stating “Laken Riley would still be alive if the Biden administration enforced our immigration laws.”
What Do Critics Say About The Laken Riley Act?
Democratic opponents slammed the Laken Riley Act as an “exploitation” of the young woman’s death for “partisan stunts.” Ranking member Jerry Nadler accused Republicans of “throwing together legislation to target immigrants.” He said the current laws are sufficient and the bill only aims to rile up voters on the immigration issue. Other Democrats argue it goes too far and could end up detaining immigrants for minor non-violent offenses.
Looking ahead, the fate of the Laken Riley Act remains uncertain as it must now go to the Senate for a vote. Republican leaders are optimistic it will pass there as well, but Democrats control the chamber and may block it or seek amendments. The White House also hasn’t indicated if President Biden would sign it into law if it reaches his desk.
