Illegal Migration Pact Signed Between UK and EU Border Force

The UK and EU have signed an agreement to step up cooperation in tackling illegal migration across borders. The deal was struck between the UK’s Home Office and Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

The new working arrangement provides a framework for the two sides to share intelligence and collaborate on training initiatives to better monitor and prevent illegal migration. While not including a returns agreement, the pact allows for information exchanges and joint research projects focused on irregular border crossings.

Working Together is Key

Illegal Migration

Home Secretary James Cleverly said organized criminal networks facilitating illegal migration can only be disrupted through united efforts. “Our borders are stronger when we work hand in hand with our European partners,” he stated. Frontex Director Ylva Johansson concurred that an integrated approach following international standards is necessary to tackle a challenge as complex as illegal migration.

The agreement formalizes cooperation already underway but takes it to a new level. Plans are in place for UK and EU officers to train together, drawing on each other’s expertise. They will also pool resources for advanced technology and analysis to gain a more comprehensive view of routes used for illegal migration. It is hoped the additional coordination and intelligence sharing supported by this pact will help disrupt criminal networks and save more lives in the English Channel.
