Jaishankar Discusses Strengthening Ties With Canadian Counterpart
Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently sat down for talks with Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. The two leaders took stock of the current state of bilateral relations between India and Canada and explored avenues to strengthen ties going forward.
According to reports, Jaishankar and Canadian counterpart Joly discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest during their meeting. They exchanged perspectives on the current global situation and its challenges. Jaishankar appreciated Joly’s insights and assessments on various geopolitical matters.
Addressing Outstanding Issues
It is believed that Jaishankar and Canadian counterpart also focused on addressing some pressing bilateral issues that have created recent tensions. This includes the allegations levelled by Canadian PM Justin Trudeau regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has denied the claims. Both sides seem committed to finding an amicable resolution to concerns.
Overall, the talks between EAM Jaishankar and Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly seem aimed at taking the India-Canada partnership forward in a more positive direction. With goodwill on both sides, opportunities exist to enhance cooperation in trade & investment, defence & security and other key areas. Strengthening people-to-people ties also came up for discussion during the meeting.
