Liz Cheney Reacts To Former VP Mike Pence’s Endorsement And Echoes Her Father’s View On Donald Trump

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s announcement last week that he would not endorse Donald Trump’s presidential bid in 2024 received a reaction from prominent Republican Liz Cheney. Pence cited policy differences as the reason for not backing his former running mate. In response, Cheney echoed the view previously expressed by her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney.

When asked about Pence’s decision on Twitter, Cheney shared a video clip of her father criticizing Trump. In the video from August 2022, during Cheney’s reelection campaign, Dick Cheney called Trump “a coward” and said he was “a greater threat to our republic than any other individual.” Dick Cheney stated that Trump was responsible for the January 6th Capitol attack through promoting lies about election fraud.

Cheney’s Ongoing Opposition To Trump

Liz Cheney

Liz Cheney’s public endorsement of her father’s comments continue to demonstrate her strong opposition to Donald Trump. As one of the few Republicans in Congress willing to vote for Trump’s second impeachment and serve on the January 6th committee, Cheney has faced backlash from members of her own party. She lost her seat in the August 2022 primary after Trump endorsed her opponent. However, Cheney has vowed to keep fighting to ensure Trump never holds office again, seeing him as a danger to American democracy.

It remains unclear if Mike Pence will run for president in 2024, but his decision not to endorse Trump and Liz Cheney’s public support for it, shows that not all Republicans have fallen in line behind the former president. Cheney and Pence’s dissent from Trump’s dominance over the GOP will likely further frustrate his supporters while heartening those hoping for the party to move on from the tumultuous Trump era.
