Logan Thomas Time in Washington May Be Coming To An End
The Washington Commanders are planning to release tight end Logan Thomas prior to the start of free agency, according to reports. This move would be a surprise after Thomas had a breakout season in 2020 and was expected to continue playing a key role in the offense.
In two seasons with the Commanders, Logan Thomas showed flashes of becoming a reliable pass-catching tight end. But injuries have plagued the 30-year-old, limiting him to just 17 total games over the past two years. After tearing his ACL last December, there are doubts about whether Thomas can return to his past form.
A Breakout Season Cut Short
2020 looked to be a breakthrough campaign for Logan Thomas as he hauled in 72 receptions for 670 yards and 6 touchdowns. It was by far the most productive season of his career after switching from quarterback to tight end earlier in his NFL tenure. However, his momentum was derailed by the knee injury suffered late last season, putting his future in Washington in jeopardy.
With a projected $8.5 million cap hit for 2023, releasing Logan Thomas would free up salary cap space for the Commanders to pursue other offensive targets. But it marks an end to what looked to be an ascending partnership, before injuries interfered with Thomas’ development in Washington. Fans will remember fondly his breakout year in 2020 and hope he can find a way to stay healthy and produce wherever his next stop may be.
