Juan Soto Clutch Play Secures Yankees Win in Thrilling Debut
The Yankees new star outfielder threw out the potential tying run at home plate to end the game and give his new team a victory in dramatic fashion. In a back-and-forth battle between the two AL powerhouses, Juan Soto clutch defensive play was the difference.
The 23-year-old phenom had already made an impact with his bat, collecting his first hit and RBI as a Yankee. But it was on defense that he truly shined on Opening Day, gunning down the speedy Mauricio Dubón at the plate from right field. His laser-like throw was right on the money to catcher Jose Trevino to end the game.
“That was a Yankee classic right there,” said teammate Aaron Judge of Soto’s debut performance. “Come up there and, biggest moment of the game and just be cool. Calm and collected and deliver a strike home.” After the game, even Soto admitted that defensive plays like that are why the Yankees sought him out in the offseason.
Soto Sparks 7th Inning Rally
While Soto’s defense sealed the win, his bat also provided a spark. In the top of the 7th inning with the Yankees trailing 4-3. Soto led off with a walk and would come around to score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Alex Verdugo. The Yankees offense would plate two more in the frame to take a 5-4 lead heading to the late innings.
It was a back-and-forth battle between the two AL powerhouses, as the Astros jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. But Soto and company would fight back behind strong relief pitching and key hits when they needed them most. Nestor Cortes battled through 5 innings for the Yankees. While the bullpen shut down Houston over the final 4 innings to secure the victory.
While Soto’s debut will be remembered for his defensive heroics, his impact was felt on both sides of the ball. Stepping up in the biggest moments is nothing new for the young superstar, and Yankee fans got a glimpse of what he brings to the table on Opening Day. With Soto’s all-around talents, the Yankees are hoping he can help lead them back to the top of the AL standings.
