Ron DeSantis Rules Out VP Role But Leaves Door Open For 2028

On a call with around 300 of his supporters this week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis set the record straight about his political future. While there had been speculation he may end up as Donald Trump’s running mate, DeSantis made it clear the Vice President job is not for him. According to sources on the call, DeSantis said serving as VP would limit his effectiveness compared to remaining as Governor of Florida.

But 2028 Is Still A Possibility

Ron DeSantis

While taking himself out of the running for VP, Ron DeSantis did leave the door open for another Presidential run down the line. When asked directly if he had ruled out a 2028 bid, sources say the Governor replied “I haven’t ruled anything out.” Given he only dropped out of the 2024 primaries last month, another crack at the top job in four years clearly appeals to DeSantis.

Elsewhere on the call, Ron DeSantis had some critical words for conservative media and former allies. He implied one ex-adviser now working for Trump has “an axe to grind” and said conservative outlets have become a “Praetorian guard” unwilling to challenge the former President. DeSantis also reiterated his past comments that Trump could “shoot someone on Fifth Avenue” and face no reporting on it.

So while Ron DeSantis won’t play second fiddle to Trump in 2024, another Presidential run of his own in the future isn’t off the table based on his comments. For now he’ll focus on governing as the popular Governor of Florida, but the 2028 door remains open if he wants to make another bid for the top job.
