Golden Gate Bridge Shutdown By Gaza War Protests Demanding Peace
The breathtaking Golden Gate Bridge that connects San Francisco to Marin County became the site of a major protest on Monday. Over 20 demonstrators converged on the national landmark calling for an end to the violence in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Holding signs that read “Stop the world for Gaza”, the protesters chained themselves together and used vehicles to block all travel lanes, shutting down one of the city’s most iconic structures for over 5 hours.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the demonstration, eventually arresting the 20 individuals who were obstructing traffic. However, the protesters succeeded in drawing widespread attention to their anti-war message. With its stunning backdrop of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge provided a dramatic setting for the group to demand a ceasefire and peace for the people of Gaza enduring bombardment and hardship.
More Protests Demand End To Violence
This was not the first time the Golden Gate Bridge has been used as a site of protest related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. In February, another demonstration calling for peace in Gaza similarly blocked traffic over the bridge. The latest action coincided with tax day in the US and was part of coordinated protests around the country, with demonstrations also disrupting traffic in Chicago, New York and Seattle.
The conflict in Gaza has inflamed passions on both sides of the issue around the world. With over 30,000 casualties reported in the besieged coastal strip, protesters are utilizing disruptive direct action tactics to draw global attention and pressure governments to take a stronger stance. By shutting down a major transportation artery like the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, these demonstrators ensured their message reached far beyond just the city of San Francisco.
