John Calipari Looking To Run it Back With Key Kentucky Talent

The disappointing early exit from March Madness has Coach John Calipari more determined than ever to right the ship. In meetings with players, Calipari made it clear he plans to welcome back any who wish to run it back, with the goal of returning Kentucky basketball to its dominant ways.

Calipari expressed to players how much they mean to the program and that he will support them, no matter their decision. But the coach is also hoping some decide to run it back, believing the experience from this past season could be just what they need to avenge their tournament loss. Several guards in particular seem to be weighing a return that would solve Kentucky’s point guard question without needing to rely on the transfer portal.

A Taste of Redemption

John Calipari

Calipari told players if any commit to coming back, his message will be about getting the bitter taste of defeat out of their mouths. In just under eight months they’ll have opening night of next season, and the coach plans to use that short window to laser focus on getting back to leading the program deep into March. Physicality and leadership will also be priorities for the offseason, as Calipari wants to empower veterans to lead and hold each other accountable.

With a potentially veteran-laden roster returning, the pieces seem to be in place for Kentucky and Calipari to make another deep tournament run. But only time will tell who decides to run it back alongside the hall of fame coach in hopes of tasting the sweet victory that eluded them this year. Fans can only hope Calipari gets his way and brings as many back as possible to complete the redemption tour.
