Paige Bueckers Stays for Another Year at UConn

In a surprise announcement during UConn’s senior night ceremony on February 16th, star point guard Paige Bueckers revealed that she will be returning to the Huskies for another season. With many expecting the projected top 3 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft to go pro, Bueckers shocked the sold out crowd at Gampel Pavilion by stating “Unfortunately this will not be my last senior night here at UConn.”

When asked about her decision after the game, Bueckers said “Just the family camaraderie here, just loving it here, loving my teammates, loving my coaches, me not having the four years that I planned on, not being able to play as much. I just feel like I’m not done yet here.” The past three seasons have been challenging for Bueckers and UConn due to injuries for both her and many of her teammates, limiting the time they’ve been able to play together.

Why is Paige Sticking Around?

It’s clear that Bueckers has an incredible bond with her teammates and coaches at UConn. While she likely would have been a top pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft, she wants to make the most of her final year of eligibility with her Huskies family. After missing much of the past two seasons to injuries, Bueckers seems determined to ensure she gets a full senior season alongside friends like Azzi Fudd, who she has shared the court with for only a small portion of their time at UConn so far due to injury bad luck.

The Huskies nation could not be happier that their star player Paige Bueckers has opted to stick around for her extra season of eligibility. With a healthy Bueckers leading the way, UConn will be among the favorites to win the national championship in 2024-25. It looks like we’ll get to enjoy watching this incredible talent in a UConn uniform for one more year after all.
