Donald Trump Fails to Delay Multi-Million Dollar Defamation Payout
A New York judge denied an appeal from former president Donald Trump to delay an $83.3 million defamation judgment awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll. Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that Trump failed to demonstrate he would face “irreparable injury” by posting a bond while the case is appealed. This represents just one of several massive civil judgments facing Donald Trump.
The judgment stems from Carroll’s allegations that Trump sexually assaulted her in the 1990s. When she later made the claims public. Trump denied the incident occurred and said Carroll was falsely accusing him for financial gain or to harm him politically. A jury found these statements amounted to defamation against Carroll.
Mounting Legal Woes for Donald Trump
This is not the only major legal battle Donald Trump currently faces. Last month, a New York judge ordered him to pay $454 million. For engaging in fraud related to his business empire. Trump is also still appealing a $5 million judgment against him in a separate defamation suit brought by Carroll related to the same sexual assault allegations. With over half a billion dollars in judgments and more cases still pending. The legal pressures continue to intensify for the former commander-in-chief.
It remains to be seen how Donald Trump will address these substantial financial obligations. For now, the repeated rejection of his bids to delay consequences through the courts signals the legal challenges are far from over for the controversial former president.
