Sony HT-AX7 Review: A New Dimension in Portable Surround Sound

In the world of technology, innovation is key. However, it’s rare to see a completely new product idea from big-name manufacturers. This is what makes the Sony HT-AX7, a “wireless portable theatre system,” so intriguing.

This device, designed to deliver solo surround sound wirelessly from portable devices, is unlike anything else on the market. But does it live up to its promise, and is it worth the $499/£499/€550 price tag? Let’s delve into the Sony HT-AX7 and find out.

Design and Features of Sony HT-AX7

Sony HT-AX7

The Sony HT-AX7 consists of three components: a main speaker and two circular satellite speakers. These satellites dock neatly on top of the main unit when not in use. Serving as a storage and charging solution.

The entire system is covered in a light grey fabric made from 100% recycled PET bottles. With a rubberized control panel on top and a similar finish on the base for stability.

The Sony HT-AX7 operates solely via Bluetooth, with no Wi-Fi or LDAC for higher-resolution music playback.

It does support a multipoint Bluetooth connection, allowing you to control volume and tweak the EQ without interrupting your viewing experience on another device.

Inside the main unit, you’ll find two of Sony’s X-Balanced speaker units and two passive radiators, with each satellite housing an upward-firing driver.

Performance and Setup

Sony HT-AX7

The Sony HT-AX7 is designed primarily for individual use, aiming to enhance the sound experience for those who spend a significant amount of time watching content on their phone or tablet.

The device can be used in two ways: with the soundfield on or off. Removing the satellites from the main unit automatically triggers the soundfield, activating the immersive sound effect.

Sony recommends placing the satellites to the left and right of you, about 1 – 1.2 meters away for optimal performance.

Once paired with your device, the Sony HT-AX7 transforms the standard stereo soundtrack from your content into three-dimensional surround sound in real time.

This feature separates individual sound objects and moves them to the satellites, while Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping adds virtual speakers around the room for an even bigger performance.

Sony HT-AX7 as a Standard Wireless Speaker

While the immersive experience is the main focus of the Sony HT-AX7, it can also function as a standard wireless speaker. Simply attach the satellites back to the unit for a more balanced performance without the surround sound effect.

Additionally, the Sony HT-AX7 can be used as a party speaker by turning off the soundfield and spreading the satellites around the room, extending the main speaker sound for a good spread of sound in a room.

The Sony HT-AX7 is a niche product, made even more so by its price tag. However, if you watch a lot of long-form content on your mobile device and value great sound, the performance the Sony HT-AX7 delivers is hard to argue with.

It may be a luxury purchase, but for people wanting to make the most of their portable movie watching, there’s not another product out there like it. The Sony HT-AX7 truly brings a new dimension to portable surround sound.
