Fast & Furious Betrays its Essence in Fast X’s Ending

In Fast X, the penultimate film of the Fast & Furious series directed by Louis Leterrier, the story revolves around Dante Reyes (played by Jason Momoa), seeking revenge against Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew.

While this premise aligns with the franchise’s familiar themes, the ending of Fast X reveals a significant departure from what once made the series exceptional.

The conclusion of Fast X takes a darker, more ambiguous turn, breaking away from the typical scenes of joyful gatherings and celebration. Instead, the film ends with Dom’s vintage Charger submerged in a river beneath a dam.

And a burning plane potentially carrying a portion of the “family.” This newfound uncertainty and genuine sense of dread add a fresh element. That has been lacking in the franchise for a long time.

However, any suspense and stakes created by this ending are swiftly diminished by the resurrection of characters.

After the convoluted return of Han in F9, Fast X further undermines the impact of death by revealing Gisele (Gal Gadot). Who was thought to have made a powerful sacrifice in Fast & Furious 6, alive and well.

This resurrection eliminates the significance and emotional weight of deaths within the franchise. As the series now seems determined to bring back characters at any cost.

Lack of Consequences and Evasion of Death

The lack of real consequences and the constant evasion of death have transformed Fast & Furious into a laughing stock. Weakening its ability to create suspense and maintain stakes.

The once-clever revival of Letty (who was previously presumed dead) in Fast Five set a precedent for soap opera esque resurrections within the series.

While Fast & Furious has always emphasized the theme of family, behind-the-scenes conflicts have often overshadowed the films themselves.

The absence of Justin Lin, a key creative force involved with the series since Tokyo Drift, looms large over Fast X.

Lin played a significant role in shaping the franchise’s most successful installments, including Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6.

His movies explored the integrity of the family concept, testing and strengthening the characters’ bonds.

Rediscovering the Essence of Loss and Family in Fast X

Lin’s films showcased loss and the characters’ struggle to find purpose. Before ultimately uniting a diverse group of individuals under the same roof.

This evolution reinforced Dom’s belief that the most important thing in life is the people in the room. If anyone can claim to be family with these characters, it is Justin Lin.

In conclusion, Fast X‘s ending betrays the essence of Fast & Furious by diminishing the impact of death and undermining the importance of family.

The series has sacrificed suspense and consequences for cheap resurrections, diluting the emotional core that once made it special.

As the saga approaches its final chapter, it should reflect on its roots and again discover the power of genuine loss and the bonds forged in mourning. Listening to Dom’s wise words could help restore the franchises former glory.
